GPS Tracker Not Updating Location

A stale location can come from signal, battery, app settings, update mode, or account status. This page helps you think through common causes while keeping pet safety and manufacturer support in the loop.

First check

Start With the Timestamp, Battery, and Mode

Before assuming the tracker is broken, check when the last update happened, how much battery remains, whether live tracking is active, and whether the app is allowed to send notifications.

A tracker may wait for the next update interval, preserve battery, or struggle to reconnect when coverage is weak. If your dog is missing, do not wait on the app alone. Use local response steps at the same time.

Common causes

Why a Tracker Location May Look Stale

  • Weak cellular or LTE signal
  • Low battery or charging issue
  • Battery-saving update mode
  • Indoor walls, roofs, or metal structures
  • App permissions or phone notification settings
  • Subscription, account, or pairing issue
  • Temporary manufacturer service issue
  • Device fit or placement problem
Safe checks

Low-Risk Checks Before You Escalate

Review the tracker app for battery, connection, account, and tracking-mode messages. Confirm the device is charged, seated correctly, and close enough to reconnect if the product requires nearby setup or syncing.

Check current manufacturer documentation before resetting or changing account settings. If reset steps could remove history or pairing, follow the product's support instructions rather than guessing.

Limitations

Troubleshooting Has Limits

A troubleshooting page cannot confirm the device's live state, network status, or account configuration. Some issues require manufacturer support, a replacement part, plan review, or local coverage testing.

A working tracker still cannot replace ID tags, microchips, secure containment, supervision, or a lost-pet response plan.

Escalation

When to Seek Additional Help

If a dog is actively missing and the tracker is not updating, use the dog escape response guide while you contact local resources. Do not wait for a perfect location update.

If the tracker repeatedly fails during normal use, contact the manufacturer and avoid relying on the device as the only safety layer. If repeated escapes are the reason you use the tracker, review containment and behavior support as well.

Understand the Underlying Tradeoffs

Location issues often connect back to how tracking works, battery behavior, and subscription or network requirements. Review GPS tracker basics, battery expectations, and subscription tradeoffs.

Product evaluation

When to Compare Different Trackers

If location updates remain unreliable after support review, compare products by coverage model, active tracking behavior, battery routine, app quality, plan requirements, and collar fit rather than price alone.
